Class Description

Provides an introduction to genealogical research with a focus on using Internet sources to obtain genealogical research information. The class will combine lectures and demonstrations with opportunities for participants to work on their own family trees. It is particularly appropriate for a new genealogy researcher to start their own family tree. Designed for the beginning genealogy researcher, the class will include a discussion of how to conduct genealogical research by focusing on the important events in your ancestors’ lives. The class will focus on research in the US, with a particular focus on finding primary source documents, and will cover free websites, including those available through the Sonoma Public Library. Participants will also get experience in entering information in a program designed to keep your family tree on your own computer. The instructor will recommend a program to use if you don’t already have one. Prerequisites: Basic computer skills are required for this class. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop if they have one, or can use the computers in the class.
